Evangelist Herb Brail is here at our church this week for VBS. He spoke all day Sunday. Sunday night, he spoke out of John 15:1-16. "My life won't be a success in anything...if it doesn't count for God!" I sat there with tears in my eyes and agreed. We know firsthand what can happen to the "success" that you think you have in the world. God doesn't count...where you work, what kind of a car you drive, how big of a house you live in, what brand of clothes you wear...as successful! Yet, we get so wrapped up in chasing those things...when we are just "pilgrims...passing through". We spend all our time grabbing at and chasing those pretty, shimmery things of this life...and then once we get them...the glimmer and thrill of the catch is gone. And once again...we are off chasing new things...NEVER SATISFIED. Evang. Brail uses magic tricks to teach children about God's truth. He took out a bottle of bubbles and blew. You could see the kids getting antsy...wanting to chase and catch the bubble! He did catch one bubble and knocked it on the podium...No, children of mine, I did not see how he did that!
But I do know one thing...our children are watching what we are grabbing at in life. If we are always chasing after the things that this world says are important...we are setting our children up for failure! We may not like to hear direct preaching like this, but I am thankful for men who will stand and proclaim the truth unashamedly. If you don't like what you hear from the pulpit, search out the Scripture that is given and read for yourself. That is usually the problem...we don't know our Bible. We don't study for ourselves. We are babies...with unteachable spirits! It is important to take a look at your heart. You may have to humble yourself and admit your failure. Confession and forgiveness are wonderful blessings we have as a believer! You may find you have a wrong idea of what really counts in life...and the Holy Spirit is trying to get your attention! And it may just burst your bubble of pride!
