Another object lesson in the kitchen...

or an alternate title might be...You Think Too Much!
I do a lot of thinking throughout my days.  I can't help it.  Maybe more of us should try it!  God has given us brains.  He has given us capabilities that should be used and not wasted.  I think best in the shower or in the kitchen...when I'm alone, of course.  I made a double batch of granola...with chopped pecans.  As I stood there chopping, little pieces were popping off the cutting board...the big pieces were now in little pieces...some scattered but most in the big pile.  The knife had done its work...now what?!
The pieces had to be scooped off the board and put somewhere...into the bowl with all the other ingredients.  I mixed and then spread the oats, nuts, and other components of the granola onto the pan to bake.  Mmmm!  It smelled so good...and tastes even better.
My mind kept going back to the power of the knife...it was sharp...it cut those nuts into little pieces...that scattered over the counter easily.  Once they were cut...it was hard to tell what they had once been.
What an object lesson...that is exactly what we do with our tongue!
We brandish it around like we do our kitchen knife.
We forget the sharpness of its edge.
We know it can cut...but we don't care...as long as we are holding the handle.
I've felt just like those pecan pieces.
I know exactly how it feels when the knives come out and wield their power...cutting and chopping...
and oh how the pieces flew!
What a mess!
There is no way to put those pieces back together.
The more the knife is used...the finer the pieces.
All that can be done is to sweep up the pieces...
and hope to use them...
somehow
someway.
When you are using knives in your kitchen...do you ever think of how you are using your tongue?
It is a pretty sobering picture.  I was following a recipe that called for chopped pecans...it was necessary to make a yummy granola for my family.
It is never acceptable or necessary for me to use my tongue as a knife...for any purpose!
Do a word study on the tongue...it isn't just a fire...
Psalm 52:2-
Thy tongue deviseth mischiefs; like a sharp razor, working deceitfully.
Thou lovest evil more than good; [and] lying rather than to speak righteousness. Selah.
Thou lovest all devouring words, O [thou] deceitful tongue.
God shall likewise destroy thee for ever, he shall take thee away, and pluck thee out of [thy] dwelling place, and root thee out of the land of the living. Selah.
The righteous also shall see, and fear, and shall laugh at him:
Lo, [this is] the man [that] made not God his strength; but trusted in the abundance of his riches, [and] strengthened himself in his wickedness.
