He asked me, "Listen to this...and tell me...What does that mean to you?"

Surrender:  to cease resistance to an enemy or opponent and submit to their authority;  to give up or hand over a person, rights, or possessions typically on compulsion or demand;  to abandon oneself entirely to a powerful emotion or influence, to give in to;  lose a point, game, or advantage;  an insured person cancels (a life insurance policy) and receive back a proportion of the premiums paid

All to Jesus I surrender
All to Him I freely give
I will ever love and trust Him
In His presence daily live
All to Jesus I surrender
Humbly at His feet I bow
Worldly pleasures all forsaken
Take me, Jesus, take me now
I surrender all
I surrender all
All to Thee my blessed Savior
I surrender all
All to Jesus I surrender
Make me Savior wholly thine
May Thy Holy Spirit fill me
May I know Thy power divine
I surrender all
I surrender all
All to Thee my blessed Savior
I surrender all
To me...it means saying I am not going to hold on to having and doing things my own way.  It means letting go and following God's way...and not taking things back into my grasp and hold.  It means hands off!  It is easy to say I will let go of control...but it is another thing to actually release the grip you have on something and actually let it go.  It's our human instinct to grab at what is falling, tumbling, and spinning out of control.
God's ways are not our ways!  He does not flail His hands trying to gain control.  He always has us in His grip and under control.  His time table is not our time table!  He has plans.  We have plans.  But what happens when the plans don't match up...when we get anxious and frustrated...when we don't like His plans...when we second guess His plans...
Surrender is more than just an idea we sang about our whole life.  It is living in faith.  It is bringing our thoughts and plans in line with what He wills by asking in prayer.  Surrender is a daily letting go to allow God to work in the small details as well as in the big ideas...for His good purpose knowing He will get the glory.  What am I attempting to hold on to each day?  What will it take for me to freely give in surrender?

What does discipleship look like?

I have learned through the years that there are many ways to touch lives with love and support.  I have learned the importance of having your eyes and ears open to notice the opportunities that God gives.  I have witnessed many people turn up their noses, claim schedule conflicts, hold to the thought that it isn't their thing, and ignore opportunities.  I know who students won't go to for help and encouragement because of past situations.  What happens to adults that they lose their way in what is important in life? The students always get the blame as having bad attitudes or being disrespectful.  Yet not one person ever stands up and confronts the why of how things got to that point.  No one ever calls out the provocation.  Our student spoke up and asked for help.  So...we jumped into "Operation Help Our Kiddo with a Project" that needed a staff chaperone.
Four bags of 450 balloons each...plus a couple hundred more, four air compressors, five hoses, nine seniors, two adults, ten pizzas, and three two liters...as they finished their spirit hallway decorations.  It was a struggle for two weeks to get things going.
We enjoyed hanging out with these seniors.  Talking and sharing time with these young people who are getting ready for a big change in a couple months.  Want to stay young?  Eat pizza.  Laugh.  Blow up and tie hundreds of balloons till you can't feel your fingers.  Laugh.  Encourage.  Stay out late.  Enjoy simple things...and you will see big smiles...just because you were willing to be there...so they could see a plan play out.  Encouragement is not hard!  It takes time...how selfish we can be as adults.  How quickly we forget what it was like to be that age!  Do you ever think about what you needed when you were that age?  Be that person...now!

It happened again.

We had heard it would...and prayed it wouldn't...but it did.  Our state is in shut-down mode again and fear is reigning supreme.  The damage being done to our state...our country...our churches...our schools...our families is stunning.  I am watching and hearing Christians be paralyzed by fear.  Their words...not mine.  I have seen the panicked faces.  I have endured the shut-downs and changes that affected every day life.  I have heard the threats.  I have worked when others would not.  I have had to manage the stress and extra work...again.  I have worked to keep our home a place of peace and comfort.

OUR CHILDREN...AND OTHERS THAT WE INFLUENCE...ARE WATCHING US!  And they are seeing that our actions are not matching the words that we have been sharing with them for years!

WHAT ARE WE DOING?

DO WE REALLY BELIEVE THAT GOD IS SOVEREIGN?

HAVE WE TRULY YIELDED OUR LIVES TO HIM?  Or was that just what we were told to say to "Be a good Christian."?

Is this virus real?  Yes.  Is it as bad as they say?  No...the numbers do not support it.  Is it dangerous to some people?  Yes...and those people need to be careful and take steps of precaution.  BUT THEY SHOULD NOT BE MAKING DECISIONS FOR THE MAJORITY!

I live with a man who has a quarter of a lung that functions.  On a good day, he struggles to breathe.  He coughs.  He spits.  He gets winded.  An ordinary cold immediately goes to his lungs and turns into bronchitis/pneumonia in a short time.  I watched him several years ago go into full on pneumonia in four hours...high fever...and we went to the ER.

YES!  I could live each day crippled by the thoughts that tend to creep into my mind when I hear rattly breathing or extra coughing.  BUT WE HAVE CHOSEN NOT TO DO THAT!  God has allowed this in Ted's life for his whole life.  We have dealt with physical restrictions and made adjustments our whole married life...and we have lived life!  We have been through some difficult situations through the years that have brought us to our conviction...WE WILL TRUST GOD NO MATTER WHAT!  NO MATTER WHEN.  NO MATTER WHERE.  NO MATTER HOW.

We have taught our children that we will TRUST GOD and we will follow His leading for our lives.  And that is not tempting the Lord our God.  That is obedience!  Pure and simple!  Proverbs 3:5-6. God has given us peace amidst many storms of life.  We will live what we say we believe...whether we are out and about...or at home.  Our children are watching us.  Other people are watching us.  God expects us to live out the reason for the hope within us!  And fear...does not come from God!  2 Timothy 1:7

Hands...

As I am getting older, I am finding that the strength in my hands is diminishing.  I notice it especially when I am working on a project that requires repetitive action...pulling weeds, kneading dough, scrubbing stains, scraping paint, painting, cutting bulletin board items with scissors, and even typing.
We use our hands for so many different jobs throughout the course of the day.  I am thankful for the mobility I do have.  I do not take the use of my hands for granted.

I have always noticed people's hands.  I loved my Gram's hands.  I remember her hands being crippled with arthritis and she would shake them in the mornings.  She used her hands to serve her family and her Lord.  I think I was most impressed by how her hands had worked so hard through the years...most often...blessing others.  She made so many good things to eat.  She made things for her Sunday school girls.  She did so many things all the time.  I would hold her hand and trace her veins when I was little.  We did not get to see her very often but she would hold our hands.

I've been thinking a lot lately about working with my hands...doing for others...doing those things well.  Ecclesiastes 9:10 "Whatsoever thy hand finder to do, do it with thy might;  for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest."  I must learn from those who have gone before to work with my hands.  Titus 2

Hands often show the hard work of person does.  I have had to learn that I am not called to do everything all the time.  I must learn to relax, let go, and rest which allows everyone else to have a chance to learn to use their hands to do good for others. There is a time to let go.  I am so thankful that I can use my hands to do good.  God made me with the ability to work and to teach our children to work, as well.  I have been hit with the realization that sometimes...I need to stop working and let go...and allow God to work.  There is a point that my working hands can get in the way of God working His plan.  I am seeing the importance of working at the same time letting go.

My hands do many things during the day!  Washing, pointing, juggling, throwing, writing, cutting, hugging, catching, grasping, balancing, folding, squeezing, griping...closed and open.
My hands and fingers are not for the purpose of holding on to everything in life...that action physically brings cramping and pain after a short time.

Humanly, it is impossible to literally hold on to every part of life.  There are somethings that I must allow others to care for.  There are things that only God can hold and handle.
There are things that I am not meant to hold on to...my strength fails me...I get tired and I lose my grip.  I cannot juggle too many things...I know I am not successful in that feat.
It is better when I let go...the release brings relief.
I do not need to live with fear, pain, and stress of trying to hold on and hold everything together.
That is not my job!  I have the ability to handle only a certain amount...
there is no sense in trying to hold more than I am physically capable of holding.

Open hands show an acceptance for what is coming to fill them.
If my hands are already full...clutching to something else...I might miss what is coming.
God...the Master Creator...of my hands...
holds me safely in His hands...

So while I work and plan with my hands...I hold to God's almighty hand...
holding loosely to my feeble attempts...knowing God is in control.

I love all things coffee!

Coffee is how I start my day!
I want it.
I need it!
I am crabby when it is not there.
I grumble if it is gone.
Coffee represents more than just a hot beverage to me.  There are moments of remembrance and sharing with friends and family that are special.  I love to share it.
I love to taste it.  I love to smell it.  I love to hear it.  I love to see it.  I love to touch it.
I saw this picture posted by a friend advertising her friend's artwork.  I saved the picture because I loved her explanation of the saying.  I shall paraphrase...
"Everything that comes my way today...is from the Lord."
Oh that I would linger over the truth of these words as I savor my first cup of coffee every morning!  Everything that God has given me to do today...when I am yielded to His voice...has already passed through His mind and hands.  Did I ask for His guidance?  Approval?  Care?  Or did I dive headlong into what I wanted to do without considering God's will for me today?  Was I still long enough to hear His words?  Did I take time to read His words?
Do I consider what God has called me to do as a wife and a mother as holy?  Somethings are just so daily...over and over and over...  Really!?! God can be glorified as I clean a dirty bathroom, stand and wash dishes again, and fold the same clothes for the thousandth time?
Admittedly, I do the things...but not always happily.
Usually, I feel rushed and have time limits looming over my head.
Until...March 2020...and everything slowed down...and then stopped.
As life situations begin to pick up speed again, I am thankful for the summer months of a teacher life.  I can work back into routine...if I want...some days.  There is time to just do nothing or not do anything rushed.
I still have time to take care of things as a wife and mother without the hectic schedule.  I am beginning to wonder if I will ever be at normal functioning levels again.  What is normal?  Will there be a new normal?  Do I even want to know what the new normal is?
For now...I think I will just be grateful that God knows what is ahead.
He gives me just what I need for each day.
I will only drink from the cup of coffee...
freshly brewed and hot...
to be savored right at that appointed time of day.

2017 When life challenges me...

there are some things that I go back to over and over again.  And when satan attacks the thoughts again...I go back to Philippians 4:4-8.
IT MATTERS WHAT I THINK ON! AND WHERE MY FOCUS IS!

Do you ever get a thought in your head and it won't go away?

Our pastor was preaching...I can't even remember how long ago now...and he talked about being selfish or selfless.  Being the teacher that I am...I got stuck on the suffixes (even though we don't talk about those much in K5!)
-ISH
-LESS

For days...I keep thinking of words that go with this idea.  What do I want to be like as God's child?  I say I belong to Him, but how do I act and react every day?

-ISH  "Used to make the reference sound vague or approximate."  I remember when our children were small and we used "ish" in a negative context!
-LESS  Means "without"
-FUL  Means "full of" or "characterized by"

So I am looking for words that God uses in His Word to describe His children...and I started mentally compiling a list...only I don't do so well remembering now!  It is time to write it down!

joyful          Example: different from "joy-ish"
(I know it is not a word..but is your joy vague to you, to others, to God?)  and "joy-less"
peaceful
good
faithful
gentle
meek
temperate
kind
patient
settled
stable
quiet
contrite
pure
submissive
sober
giving
gracious
trusting
strong
maturing/growing
merciful
not self focused (JOY)
loving

Add one of these suffixes to any word listed above and see the change in the meaning!  Obviously, the actual use of -less or -ish are not the correct grammatical use...but you get the idea of what I am trying to say.
What suffix is used to describe your character?
-ISH?
-LESS?
-FUL?
It is something to think about...and not on a high academic plain.
Keep it simple...you'll get the idea.

How controlled are we by what this world has given us?

This seems like a funny idea now!
But there is more truth than not!
We miss so much by being glued to the device that is in our hand.  Ecclesiastes talks about "nothing new under the sun".  The Bible also talks about "the devices of the wicked".  God knew what was coming that would cause our hearts to be turned toward self-fulfillment.  Every generation a different vice or device.  It is a daily fight for me to not give in to the temptation of always being connected to everyone everywhere but where I am presently!

Proverbs 15:1-4

Our tongues have four distinct taste abilities...salty, sweet, sour, bitter.  Our ears have the distinct ability to hear all!

Wow!

We were reading in I Peter 3 this week in our family devotions.  We are talking about the importance of our testimony as young ladies and young man growing up.  Our world teaches quite the opposite of the passages we have been reading!  A meek (humble) and quiet (gentle) spirit is not something to ignore.  We all know people that are the opposite.  We can hear them coming a mile away.  But are we clued in to the tendencies we have to be loud and proud?  This little thought posted above stopped me!  Father, let my hidden man be beautiful in Your sight!

Do my expectations line up with God's expectations?

Wow!  Today was a doozy!  I'm not sleeping that great.  I walked out to 5 degrees and another dusting of snow on the ground.  I didn't drink my coffee yet...because I'm scared to...my stomach is off and I am praying/hoping/wishing that I am not getting the nasty crud going around.  The heat in our classroom isn't working right...so we are cold.  The kiddos, that we get to send home every day, are out of control and just plain naughty.  I'm drained by the time we get home and to have to think about dinner and helping with homework...it almost too much to bear.  We all are wishing and hoping for spring to get here...now!   And then this little tune filters through my tired brain...with a little voice that tries to counter the melody...so I sing a little louder...

"I want to be faithful.  I want to be true.  I want to be faithful in all that I do.  I want to be faithful through every test.  I want to be faithful, I'll give Him my best!"
How have you been doing the last few days?  Has God given you songs to keep your mind focused?  I've been singing hymns, choruses, choir pieces, Patch the Pirate, and others. As for this week's lesson...I got that down pat!  I'm a mother, of course, I am a servant!  Ah...but do I serve with a sweet spirit?!  Every hour...of every day...in every way.  The way I serve in my home demonstrates the attitude of my heart.  Do I keep the Proverbs 31 woman and the Titus 2 woman as my example?  Am I careful or am I sloppy with God's expectations for my role as wife and mother?  God tells me everything I do should been done decently and in order (I Cor. 14:40). If I am orderly at home, I will be a more effective servant in every opportunity that God brings my way...and it won't matter what task He leads me to see and do!

Little things...

It is Monday.  I had to talk myself out of bed this morning!  And then I remembered our discussion yesterday, "Be faithful in the little things".  Yes, I have to be that simple.  Some days...that is all I've got the energy for!  Then I looked at the lesson for this week!  Giants!  Oh...man...I really...can't...
As I type this, Ashlynn is practicing her flute and playing the song, "Savior, Like A Shepherd Lead Us".  I think my Heavenly Father is gently reminding me that He is my strength for every hour.  I don't want to give excuses and whine through my week, but honestly, that is how satan likes to get a foot hold in a my week!  I'm not going to throw stones at a Goliath like David did, but I am going to sing my way through this "giant of a week".  It is a verbal way to show what I believe about my God...to my husband and children.  Opposition to right starts where I spend the most time. What songs will you be singing this week?

Life is just...so...daily!

I read through the lesson sheet for this week and I think of all the skills and abilities that God has given or allowed me to learn.  The ones that seem to get the most use right now are the cooking, cleaning, and laundering ones.  Do you very feel overwhelmed with just the daily needs?  I do!  And then I remember that my first ministry is in our home with my spouse and children...and then flows out to others.  Serving our husbands and families is a great way to hone skills and abilities that God will use as we minister to others!  So often, we complicate the simple ways that God can use us!  Be encouraged!

Why isn't it all about me?

Pastor referenced the thought "It's not all about me!" in a message over a year ago.  I wrote it on our board at home.  It cycles through our conversations and my thoughts frequently. And then...our Sunday School small group.  I guess I really need to have it front and center in my way of thinking!  God has a plan He is working out...I can either be a help or a hindrance.  I can edify or I can destroy...and it all begins with what I am thinking.  If I focus on me and my desires, I am totally missing the opportunities God has for me!  He didn't say, "Go and make yourself priority!"  He said, "Go and make disciples." Matthew 28:19-20  And we all have them right under our feet every day!  Are you finding joy in building the church...in your home?!
